Building quality products is truly a never-ending process. It starts with equipment and processes that are specifically designed to maintain stringent parameters. In order to utilize a full-picture approach to quality, we utilize all manners of gages, calipers, profilometers, spectrophotometers, coordinate measuring (CMM), statistical process control (SPC), first article inspection (FAI), and 3D laser scanning equipment. We also operate in an RoHS-compliant facility.
Our Quality Engineers practice a rigorous Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process that involves cross-functional teams. However, at Viking Plastics, quality is the responsibility of each and every one of our team members. Our Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) is key. Quality Engineers work with Quality Technicians and Inspectors to validate new products, investigate improvement opportunities, and diagnose other issues a product might have.
Viking Plastics reviews all products and raw materials that we purchase to make sure they are meeting requirements. Once a product’s quality has been approved, we apply an internal lot number that is traced through our entire process and then recorded on the label. In some instances we’ve implemented serialized traceability that is applied directly to the product.

Where standard measuring tools fall short, Viking Plastics employs other technologies to ensure quality.
Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM)
Our Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) enables inspection of 3D features and geometric tolerances which would not be possible to inspect using standard tools or vision systems. The CMM machine is programmed to probe parts for measurement at specific locations in accordance with product specifications. Once programmed, the CMM is computer controlled, further reducing inherent operator related variations.
With the complexity of today’s molded parts, there are dimensions that are physically impossible to measure using standard tools, vision and even touch probe machines. To further enhance Viking Plastics’ quality department and ability to produce high quality, complex parts, a 3D laser scanner made by ShapeGrabber was acquired. The new ShapeGrabber laser scanner complements the CMM by allowing our quality department to measure millions of points, in just a matter of minutes. It goes beyond the ability of standard measuring tools, measuring significantly more precisely.
The ShapeGrabber Ai310 takes a full 360° scan of a part and translates it into a point cloud, which can then be overlaid to CAD. Using a color map, we are able to determine every high or low spot in a part using dimensioning tolerances taken from 2D print or CAD. With this capability Viking Plastics can create a 3D PDF that can be sent to the customer allowing them to see possible design improvements.
