Answer / Chrysler Corp.
Dayton Thermal Products Division manufactures condensers and evaporators for automotive heating and air-conditioning systems. Manufacturing operations include the brazing and welding of aluminum inlet and outlet tubes to the coil, prewashing assemblies with cleaning and etching solutions, applying a chromate coating to prohibit rust, and curing and drying assemblies at 500°F.
The Challenge
Once tubes are brazed to the coil, they move on to successive manufacturing operations in an unsupported, fragile position. Brazed joints frequently failed as the tubes were handled during these processes, particularly as workers attempted to align inlet and outlet ports in the proper position. Such failures resulted in excessive scrap, rework time and lost productivity, as well as numerous customer complaints and rejection of parts.

The Viking Solution
Viking Plastics engineers designed high-temperature, chemically resistant tube clips to align and support inlet and outlet tubes at the brazing station, and to keep units secure during successive operations.

The tube clips firmly hold the tube ends in place, and are easily installed and removed with integral finger holes. This Viking solution virtually eliminated scrap and reworks at Dayton Thermal Products, and has greatly improved customer satisfaction.
