FDM-3D Prototype FDM – 3D Printing is the perfect alternative solution to prototype tooling. Should a design question require a visual response, FDM – 3D printing can provide an answer. FDM – 3D printing allows us to provide customers with production prototypes if necessary (i.e. short run). Our sales team can provide customers a 3D model in a matter of days. Production/quality can use 3D modeling to help with plans for production and/or generating fixtures for quality measuring/testing. The biggest benefit is for smaller projects where a single part is needed for trial. With FDM, Viking Plastics can make a single usable part with no tooling costs, avoiding an expensive step in most processes. Before 3D printing, one had to rely solely on the ability to analyze a CAD model to determine possible engineering issues; with 3D printing technology, you can actually have that physical part in your hands to touch, feel, and examine.
